The reversible pumped-storage hydroelectric 3,300 MW “Mont-Negre” plant, in the Segre river (Zaragoza, Spain) represents a key contribution to the Spanish and European Electrical Grid because of:
– The contribution to increase systems reliability, sustainability and load balancing
– The reduction of energy spills
– The simplification of the adjustments market
– The security of supply
– The decrease of CO2 emissions
– The integrations of European markets
In addition, Mont-Negre outperforms other generation and storage technologies or pumped storage projects in terms of capex required. The investment in the «Mont-Negre» Project is expected to be approximately €600,000.00 per MW of installed capacity with a useful life far greater than that of other technologies. This is due to the unique geographical conditions of the site with high water volume and minimal distance to elevated ground for upper reservoir.
