Energy Union is one of the European Union’s key objectives for the XXI century with a focus on an ambitious climate policy in order to reduce CO2 emissions and offer consumers secure, sustainable, competitive, and affordable energy.
According to Communication (2015)80 on the Energy Union, the European Union has committed itself to becoming a world leader in renewable energy, and to do this it must also lead development in storage solutions.
The reversible pumped-storage hydroelectric 3,300 MW plant “Mont-Negre” on the Segre river (Zaragoza, Spain) is to become a highly flexible generating unit capable of serving the demand for regulated energy through renewable means. This power plant is built to last, and contributes to the creation of a sustainable and low carbon Energy Union that is respectful of, and committed to the environment.
The «Mont-Negre» reversible pumped-storage hydroelectric exploitation would move into first place in the global ranking of reversible pure pumped storage plants not only in terms of hydro power generation capacity and storage but also, in terms of the reliability it would add to a growing share of generation with CO2 free generation technologies. The Mont-Negre plant, will significantly contribute to strengthen the European Union as the world leader in renewable power generation and use.
